In un dormitorio pubblico gestito da una coppia meschina e avara, vivono vari vagabondi, ognuno col proprio passato fatto di fallimenti, sfortune, errori. C'è chi sogna un futuro migliore, chi ricorda le glorie del passato, chi è già rassegnato a vivere così il resto della propria esistenza. Tra loro c'è un vecchio che spicca per la propria saggezza, cercando di infondere in loro un minimo di speranza nel futuro. Kurosawa traspone, come fece anni prima Renoir, un omonimo dramma di Maksim Gor'kij. Il film si svolge quasi tutto all'interno del dormitorio, dando alla pellicola una forma statica e teatrale. Gli attori sono tutti ottimi caratteristi, sebbene il film, per la staticità di cui sopra e la lentezza e la verbosità delle sequenze alla lunga risulta un pò pesante. Kurosawa si conferma comunque ancora una volta un ottimo narratore di storie e di vicende esistenziali.
