Villaggio di Artigat, Francia meridionale, estate del 1542, durante il regno di Francesco I. Martin Guerre e Bertrande de Rols si sposano. Qualche anno dopo, accusato di aver commesso una rapina, Martin scompare improvvisamente. Quando, quasi dieci anni dopo, un uomo arriva ad Artigat sostenendo di essere Martin, la famiglia Guerre lo riconosce come tale; ma presto cominciano a sorgere dubbi sulla sua vera identità.

I lavoratori di una tintoria di tessuti si vedono ridurre le loro paghe del 20% quando il proprietario dell'azienda assume della mano d'opera Manchu per cercare di accrescere la produzione. Non sapendo come fare per recuperare il loro salario pieno, i lavoratori assoldano un attore che dovrà impersonare un monaco del tempio di Shaolin, esperto in arti marziali. Il proprietario però lo smaschera e punisce tutti quelli che hanno architettato il piano. L'attore, sentendo di aver deluso quei poveretti decide allora di recarsi proprio al tempio di Shaolin per chiedere di venire ammesso all'insegnamento del kung fu.
